Ω

Time capsules are container that are anchored in the foundation or top of a building when the foundation stone is laid. They preserve information about the past and present. Some of the capsules shown here contain plants.

Each of them forms a self-sufficient, oxygen-producing microcosm. Organic decay produces the carbon dioxide and nutrients needed by living organisms to grow. Water evaporates and condenses on the glass walls. The only necessary external influences are light for photosynthesis and heat.

My father has had a large planted glass cylinder for as long as I can remember. As a child I often opened it to enjoy the "jungle smell". It was a world model which far exceeded the meaning of the word "bottle garden" for me.

In this century the first human being will maybe set foot on Mars. In order to survive the journey (and to live there safely), a kind of space and Mars-suitable bottle garden is necessary. One that can also accommodate humans.

On the ISS it was shown that plant cultivation not only enriches the diet, but also has positive effects on social life.

Astronauts integrated them into their everyday lives as companions, and even when eating, they were part of the "round table" until they were mature enough to be eaten themselves.

In one capsule I collect small objects, some of which have accompanied me for decades - talismans, play figures, lighters, a small green uranium glass. The stock grows about every six months. What is conservation ? perhaps hope - an optimism directed towards the future.
